Nelson Mandela: 27 years in prison — and the man who walked out ready to lead

In 1964 he was sentenced to life in prison. He broke rocks in a lime quarry on Robben Island and studied law by correspondence. He walked out 27 years later, at 71, and four years after that became his country's president.

This site is about the Product Launch Formula — a method for launching courses and programs online. Nelson Mandela’s life was about something infinitely larger: the freedom of a nation. We include his story with humility, because one part of it speaks to anyone who has ever felt stuck: what he did with the years when he could do almost nothing.

Chapter 1

Nelson Mandela’s road to prison

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa. He became a lawyer and a leader in the struggle against apartheid — the system of racial segregation and oppression enforced by South Africa’s government.

On 5 August 1962 he was arrested near Howick. At the Rivonia Trial he was convicted on all four charges on 12 June 1964. The prosecution had sought the death penalty. The judge sentenced him to life imprisonment.

He was 45 years old.

Chapter 2

Nelson Mandela on Robben Island: the lime quarry

He was sent to Robben Island, a prison off the coast of Cape Town. From January 1965 he and other prisoners were put to work in a lime quarry, breaking and digging rock under the bright sun. The glare off the white lime permanently damaged his eyesight.

He would spend 18 years on Robben Island — from 1964 to 1982.

He was given a life sentence and a hammer. He used the years to study.
Chapter 3

Nelson Mandela studies law from a prison cell

While imprisoned, Mandela studied for a law degree (LLB) from the University of London by correspondence. The authorities took his study privileges away for four years after 1975; he resumed in 1980.

Think about the patience in that. No guarantee he would ever leave prison. No guarantee the degree would ever be useful. He studied anyway — preparing for a future that, from inside a cell, looked impossible.

Chapter 4

Pollsmoor, Victor Verster and the day Nelson Mandela walked out

In 1982 he was moved to Pollsmoor Prison, and in 1988 to Victor Verster Prison. In February 1990, President F. W. de Klerk ordered his release. Nelson Mandela walked out of prison after 27 years, at the age of 71.

He didn’t walk out bitter. His government would later emphasize reconciliation between racial groups, creating the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses.

Chapter 5

Nelson Mandela, Nobel laureate and president

In 1993 Mandela and de Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize. On 10 May 1994, after South Africa’s first fully representative democratic election, Nelson Mandela became the country’s first Black head of state. He was 75. He served until 1999 and died on 5 December 2013, at 95.

What Nelson Mandela’s story teaches about building something

We want to be careful here. Mandela’s struggle was not a business lesson, and it would be wrong to reduce it to one. But some of the human qualities in his story apply to every hard project, including building a business.

Nelson Mandela lesson 1: prepare during the waiting years

He studied law in a cell. Many people are in a “waiting season”: a job they can’t leave yet, a small audience, little time. That season can be used for preparation — learning the skills, building a small list, writing the first lessons. Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula is something people often study for months while still in their day job, preparing for the day they launch.

Nelson Mandela lesson 2: long timelines are not wasted timelines

27 years is an unimaginable time. Next to it, the months it takes to build an audience or a first product look small. If your business is growing slowly, measure progress honestly and keep going.

Nelson Mandela lesson 3: lead with generosity

Mandela chose reconciliation over revenge. In launching, the equivalent is generosity: give real value first, treat your audience with respect, and never manipulate. The PLF approach — teaching for free in the prelaunch before making any offer — is a business expression of that principle.

Nelson Mandela lesson 4: “it always seems impossible until it’s done”

That line is widely attributed to Mandela, though its exact origin is debated. Whether or not he said those exact words, his life demonstrates them.

The years Nelson Mandela could have given up hope

Any year of the 27 would have been a reason to stop believing. He kept studying, kept his dignity and kept preparing. When the door opened, he was ready.
