Stephen Hawking: given two years to live at 21 — and five more decades of work

In 1963 doctors told a 21-year-old Cambridge student he had motor neurone disease and perhaps two years to live. He sank into depression. Then he went back to work — and kept working for 55 years.

People sometimes ask whether a course like the Product Launch Formula can work “for someone like me” — someone with little time, limited energy, health problems, a demanding job. Stephen Hawking was told at 21 that he would probably be dead at 23. He spent the next 55 years changing how we understand the universe.

Chapter 1

Stephen Hawking at 21: the diagnosis

Stephen Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. He studied physics at Oxford and began a doctorate in cosmology at Cambridge. He was brilliant, young and had his whole life ahead of him.

Then he started having trouble with his movements. In 1963, at 21, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease — a progressive condition that destroys the nerves controlling the muscles. Doctors gave him a life expectancy of about two years.

Chapter 2

Stephen Hawking’s depression — and the decision to work

After the diagnosis Hawking fell into depression. What was the point of finishing a PhD if he wouldn’t live to use it? His doctors advised him to keep studying anyway.

He did. And something unexpected happened: the disease progressed more slowly than predicted. Two years passed. Then more. Around this time he met Jane Wilde, whom he married in 1965 — a new reason to keep going.

In 1966 he earned his PhD from Cambridge in applied mathematics and theoretical physics.

He was given two years. He used them to start the work of a lifetime.
Chapter 3

Stephen Hawking and black holes

In 1974 Hawking proposed that black holes are not completely black — that they emit radiation. The idea, now called Hawking radiation, connected general relativity and quantum theory in a way no one had done before. It made him one of the most famous scientists of his generation.

From 1979 to 2009 he held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge — a chair once held by Isaac Newton.

All the while, his body was failing. He lost the use of his hands and legs and used a wheelchair. Eventually he lost his ability to speak.

Chapter 4

Stephen Hawking finds a new voice

After losing his speech, Hawking communicated through a speech-generating device — first operated with a handheld switch, later with a single muscle in his cheek. Communication became slow and laborious. He kept writing papers, books and lectures.

In 1988 he published A Brief History of Time, a book explaining cosmology to ordinary readers. It stayed on the British Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks and had sold an estimated 9 million copies by 2009.

He died on 14 March 2018, aged 76, in Cambridge — 55 years after he was given two.

What Stephen Hawking’s story teaches about launching a product

Stephen Hawking lesson 1: you don’t need ideal conditions

Hawking worked through conditions most people can’t imagine. If you have limited time — an hour a day, a few hours on the weekend — you can still build a launch. Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula breaks a launch into specific steps, which is exactly what you need when time and energy are scarce.

Stephen Hawking lesson 2: make complex things simple

A Brief History of Time sold millions because it explained something hard in language anyone could follow. That is the heart of good prelaunch content: take what you know and make it clear for beginners. The book Launch itself is a good example of a complex method explained simply.

Stephen Hawking lesson 3: use the tools that extend you

A speech computer gave Hawking his voice back. Today, tools — including AI — can help creators write, edit and produce content they couldn’t produce alone. Our guide to launching with AI looks at how Jeff Walker’s team uses AI for launches.

Stephen Hawking lesson 4: purpose beats prognosis

Hawking’s story suggests how much a reason to keep going matters. A clear “why” — for your family, for your students, for the problem you solve — is what carries you through the slow parts of building a business.

The moment Stephen Hawking could have stopped

At 21, depressed, with a two-year prognosis, he had every reason not to finish his doctorate. He finished it — and then kept going for half a century.
